Product Description LitterMaid Elite Mega Advanced Automatic Self-Cleaning Litter Box...Designed for extra large cats or multiple cat households. Now your cat's litter box area will be constantly clean. This litter box actually cleans itself and deposits the waste in a disposable container that seals away the waste and odors. When the receptacle is full, just throw it away and replace with a fresh one (replacements sold separately). The litter box's infrared sensor detects waste deposits and rakes them away 10 minutes after your cat departs the litter box. Super quiet motor uses a low-voltage AC adapter (included) or batteries (8 standard "AA" batteries -- not included).

| Customer Reviews: Littlebox "down-and-out" in just one week March 8, 2010 Richard Sauer (Chgo. IL) I ordered this unit as a replacement for an older unit (to be truthful, I have had several over a period of 8 years). It takes about a half hour to assemble the unit. I threw my old one out in the container this unit came in. Throwing out the box was rather premature, beause today the new unit just stopped working after only 6 or so days. The raking arm that travels forward to front of box just stopped in the front position and will not budge. Now I have to call Amazon and have a replacement sent, and use that packaging to return this unit. In addition, I don't think the unit will even fit in the box because of the rake being raised at the front of the unit. Amazon is being very helpful, but after reading all the negative reviews on the product, I wonder if I should just "cut my losses" and look for a new manufacturer. I have had many issues with LitterMaid over the years, but basically the unit works as intended. Lots of variables will throw the smooth operation of the unit off, many of the problems have been mentioned in the users' reviews. But for the money you get a good deal. That was, for me, up until today!
Only works with Arm & Hammer Essentials cat litter February 23, 2010 C. Wessels (USA) I purchased this item from Litterworks along with the cabinet so I don't have to buy those pricey receptacles and don't have to worry about my four cats filling them up within a day or two. I was about ready to throw this thing out. It simply did not do what they said it would, I was cleaning the box out manually because the rake couldn't push the soiled litter because it was too heavy. I contacted Litterworks and complained since this was almost a $300 investment with the cabinet, supplies and LME900. They advised me to try out a lighter litter, one made of corn. Corn? It can't possibly work, can it? Well, I rushed out to the store in a last resort to resolve my kitty litter woes. I cleaned out the entire box, cabinet, floors, etc. (my cats were not pleased with the performance either) and filled the box up to the minimum fill line (which I was skeptical about as well). I waited patiently for my siamese to inaugurate the box with the new litter and walked away. Ten minutes later I heard the motor start... and this time it continued, all the way across the littermaid, dumping the waste into the chute and down into the cabinet as promised. This is my second littermaid. I had one years ago that ultimately ended up throwing out because it used to do the same thing, but the rake wasn't removable and with this purchase, I'd hoped that they had improved on the design. It seems, you must have perfect conditions for it to work. One thing you definitely DO NOT want to do is operate this thing on batteries alone. It's like operating a washing machine on batteries... yes, it might work, but not so well. It's been about a week now that I've been using the new litter and overall I am pleased however, we do go through a bit more litter as it seems to be so light that it builds up on itself and gets dumped down the chute. Perhaps I will give the Litterworks Crystals a try, they're experimenting with it online now with their two office cats. We shall see how things go.
Littermaid Elite February 21, 2010 K. Hale (Indianapolis, IN United States) I like the Littermaid Elite. I purchased one about a month ago after my other automatic litter box pooped out (excuse the pun). First off, don't purchase additional receptacles...use a plastic grocery bag and slide the receptacle inside it, then when it's time to empty the receptacle lift the receptacle out of the box and pull the bag off and wha la. No need to spend more money then what is needed. I LOVE the night timer. The last box we had didn't have this and would go off in the middle of the night which always woke me up. I have it set to turn off at 11pm and back on at 7am. The only thing I do not like about this is if you fill the litter to the "fill line", it still pushes good litter along with the clumped used litter into the receptacle and the rake has a problem going through the litter when it's to the fill line also. I'm going to try using another brand of litter, I use Tidy Cat in it now. Maybe a finer litter would work better, as the Tidy Cat are bigger grains then the fine ones. Occasionally it leaves little clumps behind. I will always purchase a automatic litter box since it's a lot better then having to scoop the box every day.
On our 4th replacement... February 19, 2010 Jennifer Hutcherson (AZ) To keep this short and to the point, we are currently waiting for our fourth replacement unit in 18 months. This last time the company was refusing to cover the failure because one of the cats may have got some urine on the motor. Its a litterbox! If the motor is that sensitive they need to create a sealed inclosure, instead of a vented one for the "ionization" effect. All three of our failures have been due to motor failure. thankfully the unit comes with a 12 month warranty, but at $10 a pop to cover shipping we are almost half way to a new unit, or four regular litter boxes. We have two cats, so it is not getting overused. The on/off switch also began to fail because of some overspray. Unfortunately we have a male cat with bad aim...go figure. The unit is very loud when it is running, so if you decide on trying it out seek a place that won't disturb you. It also needs a 120V outlet, which can also create a dilema when selecting a location. There is battery backup, but that is all it is. When it runs on the backup batteries don't expect it to run long term. If we weren't already invested in this mess I would throw it in the garbage and go back to the old fashioned box. there has to be a better, more reliable box out there. Especially for the price.
Was expecting a good product, but... February 15, 2010 B. Green I bought this from PetCo 4 days ago, for my sister who has 2 cats and is in the hospital and will not be able to bend over and clean litter boxes for a while. It was the model that included the cover, which I didn't need. I tried it out on my small female cat for a couple of days and it worked without a problem. Then I installed it in her apartment, replacing 1 of 2 traditional boxes, where the female cat used the one I didn't replace and the male cat used this one. I waited for him to check it out first, he got in it but never used it while I was there. I wasn't concerned since I had seen it used successfully before.
2 days later I picked my sister up at the hospital and took her home. When I checked the litter boxes, this LitterMaid was full of unscooped cat droppings and all of the litter had been pushed over to one side of the box. When I turned it off and back on, the comb ran over the part with no litter and when it reached halfway across where it encountered litter and cat droppings, the motor whined down, then reversed direction, doing absolutely nothing.
I am disappointed in this unit and it will be going back to the store for a refund as soon as I am able to do so.
